磁控光子晶体磁控光子晶体德国物理学家制造了一种可以用磁场来调节的新型光子晶体,其性能优于电调节光子晶体。德国karlsruhe研究院的stefan linden与karlsruhe大学的合作者利用一对金线制成了这个装置,金线的作用是充当人造磁性原子。这个发现为人们在纳米尺度操控光提供了一种新方法。(参考文献:phys.rev.lett. 97 083902)光子晶体是一种某些性质周期性变化的人造纳米结构材料,通常这种材料的电容率(也称介电常数)呈周期性变化,可以产生“光子带隙”从而使光的传播变得可控。其原理类似于周期变化半导体材料产生的控制电流的导带和禁带。光子晶体的实现也是通过有目的的掺杂,使晶体具备控制光传播的能力。在此之前,所有操纵可见光的光子晶体都是通过电信号调节材料的电容率来控制的。虽然从理论上讲也可以通过调节导磁率(μ)来实现这种功能,但是众所周知天然材料对可见光来讲其导磁率μ为1,也就是说,研究者不能通过调节导磁率的方法来制造光子晶体。直到现在,linden与其合作者才发现了一种用超颖材料(metamaterial)解决这个问题的方法。超颖材料是一种用纳米微杆、金属小环等制造的人工纳米结构复合材料,这些纳米小部件在材料中扮演人造原子的角色。超颖材料的性质与它的组件完全不同,包括导磁率μ不等于1。在linden他们目前的实验中,使用了一对被50纳米厚的氟化镁分开的宽为220纳米长为100微米的金线,构造了一个一维人造磁性原子阵列。然后他们将这个装置置于石英底座上,制成了一个可以使光沿特定路线传播的磁光子晶体。linden说:“我们的发现证明了关于存在磁光子晶体的理论,尽管它距实际应用还有相当的距离。”既可以利用电容率也可以利用导磁率,在设计制造光子晶体方面给了科学家们更大的自由度。
