学会一个习语最好是在一个过目不忘的语境中。今天外网上一篇报道有点意思。说是新西兰一地方议会建议把猫逐步赶尽杀绝,于是用一个习语写出一个吸睛的标题 Puss gets the boot。但细看正文的长标题却是New Zealand council proposes banning all cats。于是,你至少八九不离十地懂这个习语的意思了。猫在新西兰属外来物种,因有爱攻击本土禽类的倾向而引人反感。
get the boot, 也可以说成be given the boot,具有被动色彩,to be fired, to have one"s romantic partner end the relationship with one; to be broken up with.
1.She was a disruptive influence, and after a year or two she got the boot. 她具有破坏性影响,过了一两年,她就卷被子走人。

put the boot in,这一个习语也是非正式用语, 具有主动色彩。本来是指橄榄球做危险动作,在对方已倒地后再踢人一脚,采取不必要的残酷行为,现义指变本加厉,相当于to add insult to injury,或采取果断行动。attack another person by saying something cruel, often when the person is already feeling weak or upset.
